A key goal of the Europe2020 strategy has been to increase the contribution made by manufacturing to European GDP from 16% to 20% by 2020. The reindustrialisation of the European economy, if it is to be a globally competitive reality, faces many challenges. These include mega trends such as access to raw materials, climate change and energy prices, to more comparatively localised issues such as EU competition, industrial and tax policies, skills, education and employment matters.

Eighteen months on from the European Commission’s communication "For a European Industrial Renaissance”, and with the Europe2020 strategy mid-term review public consultation results now in the public domain, this Forum Europe - RAND Europe joint conference initiative will assess Europe’s industrial policy, key outcomes from the public consultation, future priorities for policymakers, the role of industry, both hi-tech and otherwise, the future of R&D and investment, and the outlook for skills, jobs and growth in Europe. What is Europe to do to avoid the so-called jobless recovery and ensure the future competitiveness of Europe’s industrial and manufacturing base?
