AIM, Inc., the global trade association recognized as the worldwide authority on automatic identification and data collection (AIDC) and networking in a mobile environment, today announced the publication of the International Symbology Specification for PosiCode. As a unique, position based symbology, this code is designed for creating readable bar codes in processes where controlling bar widths may be difficult. It is well suited for direct part marking processes such as laser engraving, chemical etching, dot peen or indent marking and machining. PosiCode is a "position" based linear symbology, and very different from most single width symbologies that are presence/absence symbologies. A position-based symbology decouples the widths of the bars from their positions. The centers of the bars are laid out on a grid of equally spaced parallel lines. Upon “reading” the code the data is decoded based on the position of the bars rather than their widths. PosiCode is capable of encoding numbers, letters and two punctuation marks. A summary of the symbology can be seen online at http://www.aimglobal.org/standards/symbinfo/posicode_overview.htm To buy a copy of the complete PosiCode specification, contact AIM at any of the following locations below or visit the online AIM Store at http://www.aimglobal.org/aimstore/. # # # All Technical Specifications published by AIM, Inc. are reviewed by experts around the world. AIM member companies have volunteered their time and expertise to develop, review, and adopt these important specifications. Likewise, the association has invested significant resources to service the Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) industry with timely and accurate standards. Publication of these documents reaffirms that AIM, Inc., as the global trade association for AIDC technology, is committed to developing programs and resources that will foster the worldwide understanding of the benefits of AIDC Technologies.
