European Retail Technology Team of the Year Award An initiative organised in conjunction with the Home Office to demonstrate the effectiveness of Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) to minimise property crime has won the team members a prestigious European Retail Technology Award The selected supply chain team was led by Unilever Research and included Lever Faberge as the product manufacturer, Tibbet & Britten and Wincanton Logistics as Logistics Providers, Intellident as System Integrators and Safeway as the retailer. The purpose of the evaluation was to establish the feasibility of using RFID technology to ‘track and trace’ the flow of products from point of manufacturer to point of sale. The ultimate aim being to provide real-time product tracking via web based reporting, enabling more efficient and agile supply chain management, while reducing stock shrinkage. Intellident was selected as the Systems Integration Partner to the Consortium, primarily due to their ability to offer a truly ‘single source’ RFID solution which included software, project management, ‘best of breed’ tag selection and customised engineering skills specific to RFID applications. The product selected to be tracked was Lynx Deodorant, which is transported as six units per case with 528 cases per pallet. RFID tags were incorporated into the ‘six-unit cases’ during manufacture and the unique encrypted ID was recorded via Multireaders onto Intellident’s software – Assetrak. Packs were recorded onto the pallet and each pallet carried its own RFID tag. At each stage of movement of the product through the supply chain, the pack/pallet tags were interrogated via fixed or handheld scanners to record movement, change of ownership or location. The typical route being; from product manufacture through warehousing to dispatch and retail store receipt with eventual shelf replenishment. Unilever intend to use this project to help establish RFID technology as an endorsed tracking tool for FMCG companies due to its potential to enable improved supply chain management as well as reduce shrinkage.
