Charles “Chuck” Biss Honored with Prestigious Richard R. Dilling Award

AIM, Inc., the global trade association recognized as the worldwide authority on automatic identification and data collection (AIDC) and networking in a mobile environment, has awarded its highest honor, the Richard R. Dilling Award, to Charles “Chuck” Biss, Vice President of Hand Held Products, Inc. The award, named for an industry pioneer and former AIM Vice President, recognizes outstanding career-long contributors who have helped advance AIDC technologies in multiple industries. Mr. Biss began his AIDC career with Photographic Sciences Corporation (PSC, Inc.) almost 30 years ago, rising in the ranks and holding positions ranging from Quality Assurance to Vice President of Verification Products Group. He was responsible for the technical support of the world’s first successful film master and bar code verifier, the AutoScan, as well as an instrumental contributor in the development of Quick Check, a bar code verifier product line. In addition, Mr. Biss has three AIDC related patents to his credit. He is internationally renowned for his support of standardization work and has served as a representative to several national and international AIDC standards bodies such as AIM, the Uniform Code Council (UCC), ANSI, ISO, AIAG and EAN. Currently, Mr. Biss is the Vice Chair of the US Tag to SC31 and a longstanding member of the AIM Technical Symbology Committee (TSC). In addition, he is Chairman of the ANSI A1 committee on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and served as Chairman of that committee during the development of the ANSI standard X3.183 Bar Code Print Quality Guideline. During his outstanding career, he has served as Chair of the AIM Technology Standards Executive Committee and the AIAG Automatic Identification Project Team. Mr. Biss has also been a member of the AIAG Bar Code Applications Work Group and Symbology Work Group, the EIA PEPS Bar Code subcommittee, the HIBCC Bar Code Technical Committee, the TCIF Bar Code committee, the ASTM F05 Committee on Business Imaging Products, the GSC committee of the UCC and EAN, and the ANSI MH10.8 and 2D committees. Mr. Biss graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Photographic Sciences and Instrumentation. He has been an active member of several local community groups such as the Rotary Club, Boy Scouts and the United Methodist Church.
