Healthcare - AIDC Vertical Markets

is where accuracy and quality matter most, and  is why it is one of the most-used environments for automatic identification and data collection technologies. Millions of barcodes, RFID tags, RTLS systems and other AIDC technologies are used every day throughout the healthcare system to accurately identify patients, medications, samples, medical devices and other assets, and to accurately record activity. AIDC systems improve healthcare quality by taking errors out of processes.

AIDC technologies can eliminate manual data entry, and the typographical and transcription errors that come along with it. They are used almost everywhere accurate identification, data entry and data access are needed. Here are some of the most popular and emerging use cases:

· Barcode and RFID wristbands make positive patient identification fast and accurate. AIDC systems can link directly to electronic medical records (EMR), patient flow systems and other clinical and operational applications.

· The technologies are also used at the bedside and link to electronic health record systems or error-free automated medication administration, pre-procedure patient verification, sample identification and even to make sure patients receive the right meals they ordered.

· Lab workers use AIDC to track samples and can scan bar code menus to automatically record activity performed into LIM systems.

· Hundreds of care facilities use real time locating systems (RTLS) technology to carefully manage valuable equipment and make sure it is always available and can be found when needed.

· Organizations at every stage of the supply chain use AIDC technologies to improve accuracy and save time materials management, inventory control and asset management operations.

· Emerging use cases include medical device traceability through the FDA Unique Device Identification (UDI) program, tracking individual surgical items through sterilization processes to ensure no items are missed, and using unit-of-use bar code labeling and RFID tagging to provide complete traceability for medications.

AIM members pioneered many of these processes and our Healthcare Committee is actively involved multiple initiatives to improve healthcare quality and safety improvement. Our UDI Working Group is developing resources to help organizations meet FDA requirements and benefit from UDI marking.
