Kitting with RFID Reduces Response Times and Improves Operational Efficiency
Customer: Partnership for Response and Recovery (PaRR) Inspections is a contracted manager of FEMA housing inspection services nationwide. When a disaster is declared, PaRR dispatches inspectors to do physical home inspections, collecting and reporting information on behalf of those applying for federal assistance. Each inspector must be outfitted with a tailored kit containing numerous pieces of data collection equipment. Putting the right equipment into the hands of each of several-hundred individual on‑site inspectors, especially in a post-disaster environment, is a logistical challenge.
But for PaRR, an equally important concern was accurate tracking and recovery of the government-owned equipment after the event. With the mostly manual tracking processes they had in place, errors were frequent, damaged or faulty equipment was not properly identified and recovery of missing components was a long, arduous and costly process. PaRR sought a solution that would help automate and improve their entire asset tracking process.
Solution: In the Winchester warehouse, more than 65,000 equipment items were tagged, including ruggedized computers, power supplies, cables, printers and other necessary peripherals. Kits were built that included anywhere from eight to 20 components for data collection, then palletized into groups of 60, shrink-wrapped and stored for immediate deployment.
Manual check-out and check-in of field equipment was entirely eliminated. The new paperless system is fully automated, providing significant improvements in inventory accuracy, speed of post-disaster deployment and tracking of equipment in use. The closed box checkin system means a returned kit can be inventoried and received in a single scan, without the need to open and place hands on as many as 20 individual items inside.
